The Bridge
by Kenneth Lyen
The Bridge is an episode that I wrote for a series of horror shows to be aired on Singapore television. It is based on the legend that construction workers decapitated little boys' head and buried them on either side of the bridge so as to protect themsevles from evil spirits. My story follows one such boy looking for his head.
The protagonists are Adrian and Celeste who play in a string quartet and are lovers, now growing apart from one another. The leader of the quartet has shown an interest in the beautiful cellist, and this makes his colleague extremely jealous. To add to the protagonist's problems is that he is going deaf.
Every night Adrian crosses Anderson Bridge after rehearsals to go home. But now, he is starting to hear things, including the voice of a little boy calling for his help. I won't tell you any more, only to say that there are many scary scenes.
Tonight I was asked to play the violin. Luckily they did not need to shoot me as I'm not very photogenic. They just needed my below-average playing. Anyway I enjoyed my cameo role, playing the violin. The script is my first venture into horror, and I must say it's great fun! The producer of the series is Eric Khoo, and the director for this episode is Adrian Tan, who doubles up as a Director of Photography. Adrian Pang plays the role of his namesake, Adrian.
I'm really looking forward to watching the final product. I'm confident it will surpass all the locally made ghost stories. It will be aired on Mediawork's Channel U during the Chinese Lunar Seventh Month, on 22 August 2004. Be scared!
